UNITAR Global Water Academy (UGWA)

The UNITAR Global Water Academy (UGWA) can play a key role in supporting the outlined Contributing Priority Actions for water and sanitation through its training, capacity-building efforts, and international partnerships: Lead and inspire collective action for water and sanitation (Output 1.1): The UGWA can position water and sanitation as a strategic leadership priority by offering hybrid training programs that equip UN leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders with the necessary knowledge and skills to tackle global water challenges. By fostering collaboration and sharing best practices, UGWA can inspire collective action, promoting integrated water management and innovative solutions across regions. Engage better for countries by leveraging "whole of UN system" support (Output 2.2): UGWA can mobilize a diverse range of stakeholders—including local communities, academia, policymakers, industries, and NGOs—by creating a multidisciplinary learning platform. This platform would promote the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and resources needed to drive progress on water and sanitation goals. UGWA's focus on capacity-building can support countries by facilitating access to expertise and fostering partnerships to address specific water and sanitation needs. Account through joint review and learning (Output 5.2): UGWA can provide a space for joint learning and review of water-related progress by hosting discussions, training, and reviews on the implementation of SDG 6 targets. By encouraging dialogue and knowledge sharing among global water experts, local practitioners, and governments, UGWA can help track progress, identify challenges, and develop scalable water management solutions, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of global and local water-related issues.

United Nations System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation

The Contributing Actions are key initiatives supporting the United Nations System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation, aligning individual and joint efforts across UN entities and partnering organizations to advance global water and sanitation goals. These actions are integrated into the Collaborative Implementation Plan (CIP) Results Framework 2025-2028, which provides a structured approach to achieving system-wide impact through coordinated UN efforts.
The Priority Collaborative Actions outlined in the framework focus on enhancing water security, improving governance, strengthening climate resilience, and accelerating progress on sanitation and hygiene. By fostering system-wide collaboration among UN agencies, these actions help drive policy coherence, knowledge sharing, and innovative solutions to address the world’s most pressing water challenges.
