Our Work

The world is seriously off track to meet SDG 6: to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. To achieve this critical goal, the United Nations system, international community, and national governments must work much faster and smarter, maximizing synergies and giving countries more effective support.

UN-Water’s work focuses on enabling data-driven acceleration and coordination to achieve SDG 6 and other international water-related commitments.

The achievement of SDG 6 is UN-Water's overarching priority. Since the launch of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2015, UN-Water has monitored efforts and provided coherent and reliable data on progress through our SDG 6 Data Portal.

Based on our latest ‘data drive’ in 2020, collecting country level data via custodian agencies for various SDG 6 indicators, UN-Water informed the international community, through a collection of updates, that progress needs to quadruple to reach SDG 6 by 2030.

The intention is that these renewed efforts are conducted through the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework, launched by UN-Water in 2020. It is a unifying initiative that aims to deliver fast results at an increased scale by mobilizing United Nations agencies, governments, civil society, private sector and other stakeholders.

The Framework is part of the Water Action Decade 2018-2028, during which the global community commits to advancing the water agenda by energizing existing programmes and projects and inspiring water action to achieve the 2030 Agenda, in particular SDG 6.

As responsibility for achieving SDG 6 ultimately lies with Member State governments, UN-Water supports United Nations Resident Coordinators and United Nations Country Teams to connect with expertise and support from our Members and Partners, to coordinate and share best practice, and to take effective action towards SDG 6 and other key water-related initiatives.
