International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC)

Together with partners under the Water Finance Coalition, we aim to improve the financing of water and sanitation in order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6, the Paris Agreement goals and to contribute to biodiversity protection.

Watershed Empowering Citizens works to make sure that, by 2030, each person in every community has access to sustainable water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services and that their district government is improving and protecting the sources of their water.

IRC supports key global partnerships that work to deliver positive change towards water, sanitation, and hygiene service delivery. E.g. Sanitation and Water for All (SWA) and Agenda for Change.

In Ethiopia, IRC coordinates quarterly meetings of the Sanitation Marketing Multi-Stakeholders Partnership that serve as the secretariat to the Ministry of Health. This platform brings regional level discussions to the national level.

IRC drives regional and global change e.g. the District WASH Master Planning Facility.

IRC is doing national systems strengthening, e.g. a joint IRC-SNV project, working on improving the sanitation chain and raising awareness.

IRC contributes to national systems strengthening, e.g. in Ghana, the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) in collaboration with IRC and partners launched Good Practice for WASH in Ghana: Meeting the Targets for Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Sustainable Development Goals, a booklet which calls on stakeholders to develop robust systems for partnerships and build strong coordination mechanisms with clear roles and responsibilities towards meeting the targets for WASH SDGs. IRC Ghana also convenes the National Learning Exchange on District-Wide Approaches (DWAs). In Ghana, Ethiopia and Uganda, learning alliances established at regional level have formally adopted an SDG related vision and continue building their capacity and profile as platforms for WASH systems strengthening. In Uganda, at the national level, we are sharing the lessons learned and advocating for increased government and political leadership, public finance and the proper management and use of WASH services as part of the Uganda WASH Agenda for Change coalition.
