Safe water in the Mekong Delta

Within the Mekong Delta, much of the water quality research has focused on large bodies of water. Within these main river channels, pollutants and contaminants are often diluted due to the massive volumes of water.

Working closely with local communities has shown that they primarily use smaller water sources near their homes for daily use. In these smaller streams and canals the concentrations of pollutants and contaminants are much higher.

To understand the impacts of water quality on household life in the Mekong River region, there is a need to focus on the many small canals and waterways in the region. Only by examining these community water sources, as well as groundwater, can we begin to get a better picture of how to overcome the challenge of ensuring access to safe water.
