The theme of the 2024 HLPF will be ‘Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: The effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions’.

The HLPF is the main UN platform on sustainable development. It has a central role in the follow-up and review of implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its SDGs. All UN Member States, as well as representatives from civil society organizations, participate in the HLPF, which meets under the auspices of ECOSOC.

During the HLPF, there will be an SDG 6 Special Event on Tuesday 16 July. The SDG 6 Special Event takes place annually during the HLPF giving space for discussion on water-related SDG targets.

10:00 – 13:00 and 15:00 – 18:00 EDT
Conference Room 11, UN HQ, New York

The fourth annual SDG 6 Special Event provides opportunities for discourse on global water and sanitation topics and features the launch of the UN System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation. Other activities of the Special Event include discussions of country-level actions toward implementing the new UN strategy. Additionally, SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework Country Acceleration Case Studies from Cambodia, Czechia, and Jordan will be launched.

The Special Event facilitates a space to engage in the global water discourse with updates from international water events, a Member States roundtable about the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, as well as updates on the Water Action Agenda commitments made during and following the UN 2023 Water Conference. In light of the HLPF's in-depth review of SDGs 1, 2, 13, 16, and 17, the SDG 6 and Water Action Agenda Special Event further focuses on approaches to mainstream water in the context of no poverty, zero hunger, climate action, peace, and partnerships.

HLPF Special Event programme details are available here, with the draft agenda available here. The event will be livestreamed on UN Web TV and the link will be shared here shortly.
