At the midpoint of the United Nations Transforming our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda), the world is not on track to achieve water-related Sustainable Development Goals and targets at the global level by 2030 at the current rate of progress. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all is significantly off-track.

With just seven years to go until the end of the 2030 Agenda, swift and purposeful action is needed to change course and accelerate progress on SDG6, to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

In response to key milestones in 2023, including the historic UN 2023 Water Conference, Member States adopted UN General Assembly resolution A/RES/77/334, requests the Secretary-General to present a United Nations system-wide water and sanitation strategy in consultation with Member States before the end of the seventy-eighth session of the General Assembly.

UN-Water, under the leadership of the UN-Water Chair will assist the Secretary-General in responding to General Assembly resolution A/RES/77/334. Building on the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework, UN-Water will support the Secretary-General with the coordination and implementation of the strategy.

The draft version of the UN system-wide strategy for water and sanitation is available here for information-sharing purposes only. Kindly note that this draft document is still under consideration by UN system entities towards its finalization and approval by the UN system.
