UN-Water is the United Nations (UN) inter-agency coordination mechanism for freshwater related issues, including sanitation. While there is no single UN entity dedicated exclusively to water and sanitation, over 30 UN entities carry out water and sanitation programmes, reflecting the fact that water runs through all areas of work at the UN. The mission of UN-Water is to enable the UN system to ‘deliver as one’ on water and sanitation-related issues by maximizing UN system-wide coordinated action and coherence.

Through its 32 (UN) Members and 40 (non-UN) Partners, UN-Water supports Member States to sustainably manage water and sanitation in three ways: Informing policies, monitoring and reporting, and inspiring action. UN-Water’s Members and Partners have helped build water and sanitation into recent milestone agreements such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the 2015-2030 Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the 2015 Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development, and the 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change.

UN-Water is committed to support Member States in their efforts to implement these agreements and ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all. As part of the UN reform, the UN-Water family is extending its offer to UN Country Teams and Resident Coordinators’ Offices to support their analytical and technical work, and to help raise awareness about the importance of water and sanitation issues.

UN-Water Publications

UN-Water’s publications can be divided into two main groups: the publications that represent all Members and Partners of UN-Water – the collective products – and the publications that are under the UN-Water umbrella but produced by groups or individual UN-Water Members and/or Partners – the related products.
