WMO Warns Global Temperatures Likely to Break Records Again

Global temperatures are expected to remain at or near record highs over the next five years, intensifying climate risks and impacting water resources, warns a new report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

According to the WMO Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update (2025-2029), there is an 80% chance that at least one year between 2025 and 2029 will surpass 2024 as the warmest year on record. The report also predicts that precipitation patterns will have big regional variations.

While long-term average warming is still below 1.5°C, WMO warns that every fraction of a degree brings greater threats – more extreme heatwaves, floods, droughts, glacial melt, and rising seas – placing increasing pressure on communities, ecosystems, and global development goals.
