Integrated water resources management (IWRM) and sustainable inland fisheries

Inland capture fisheries are impacted by external factors like hydropower, land use changes, and urbanization, often managed at basin levels. To ensure fisheries are included in broader governance through Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), FAO’s Inland Fisheries group launched an initiative to enhance collaboration between regional fishery bodies (RFBs) and basin management organizations (BMOs), starting with a workshop in Entebbe in December 2023. A regular steering committee, chaired by INBO and supported by FAO, now oversees this cooperation.

The Contributing Actions are key initiatives supporting the United Nations System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation, aligning individual and joint efforts across UN entities and partnering organizations to advance global water and sanitation goals. These actions are integrated into the Collaborative Implementation Plan (CIP) Results Framework 2025-2028, which provides a structured approach to achieving system-wide impact through coordinated UN efforts.
