South Sudan moves towards UN Water Convention

South Sudan is working towards stronger water governance by accelerating its accession to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes, also known as the UN Water Convention.

Situated in the Nile River basin, landlocked South Sudan faces severe challenges, including catastrophic floods, droughts, and significant development and humanitarian issues. The country views strengthened transboundary cooperation as crucial for its sustainable growth and regional integration.

During a national workshop in July 2024, South Sudan's officials, including the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, discussed the benefits and challenges of joining the Convention. The workshop brought together over 80 participants, including government representatives, regional organizations, and civil society, to explore how the Convention could enhance existing transboundary water cooperation initiatives.

This move is part of South Sudan’s broader strategy to engage in regional agreements and attract development resources, aiming to address its water management challenges and foster long-term recovery.
