World Wetlands Day 2025, on 2 February, centres on the theme: “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.” This year’s global campaigns underscores the urgency of bold action to protect these natural habitats for the welfare of all people, and so future generations can continue to benefit from all that wetlands provide.

World Wetlands Day, marked every year on 2 February, is organized by the Secretariat of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands. The global campaign calls on governments, organizations and individuals to protect our planet’s wetlands.

Freshwater wetlands include rivers, lakes, flood plains, peatlands, marshes and swamps. Healthy wetlands are critical for climate mitigation, adaptation, biodiversity and human health. In many areas, unsustainable development, pollution and climate change threaten the health and existence of these essential ecosystems.

World Wetlands Day 2025 is promoting three key messages:

  • Protecting the world’s wetlands is in our common interest – it safeguards us all.
  • The future of humanity depends on bold action today to protect and restore these indispensable ecosystems.
  • The 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands (COP15), 23-31 July 2025, will unites the global effort to promote wetland conservation and ensure the continuity of their benefits.
