UNU-EHS report: Interconnected Disaster Risks - Turning Over A New Leaf

“Interconnected Disaster Risks: Turning Over A New Leaf”, launched on 9 April 2025, is the latest edition in a science-based report series from the United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS).

The new report series analyses interconnected risk tipping points that represent immediate and increasing risks across the world. A risk tipping point is reached when the systems that we rely on for our lives and societies cannot buffer risks and stop functioning as expected.

In light of the multiple crises facing humanity, the report asks a central question: “If we know what to do, why aren’t we doing it?” and explores five fundamental changes that can help the world change course:

  1. Rethink waste: From trash to treasure
  2. Realign with nature: From separation to harmony
  3. Reconsider responsibility: From me to we
  4. Reimagine the future: From seconds to centuries
  5. Redefine value: From economic wealth to planetary health

The report focuses on how these changes can help combat challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, pollution and inequality. The authors analyze the reasons for slow progress to date and propose steps to achieve faster change.
