UNESCO: Webinar on Land Subsidence

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme (IHP) will host the second webinar of its “Frontiers of Global Water Science” series, titled “Land Subsidence: Latest Advances in Science and Good Practices Around the World” on Thursday, 6 March 2025, from 13:30 to 15:00 CET.

Small water reservoir

Aquifer-system compaction and land subsidence due to groundwater pumping is increasingly affecting larger regions and with greater consequences worldwide. The UNESCO Land Subsidence Flagship Initiative aims to address these issues by advancing knowledge and enhancing collaborative research to support governments at the national and regional levels.

In the webinar, leading scientists will highlight the frontiers of the science of land subsidence, a snapshot of the situation in the world, the consequences caused by land subsidence, and good practices around the world. The presentations will be followed by a 25-minute Q&A session.
