SDG 6 Water Action Agenda Special Event at the High-level Political Forum 2025

The SDG 6 Water Action Agenda Special Event will take place on Tuesday, 22 July 2025, from 3:00-6:00pm EDT, in Conference Room 11 at United Nations Headquarters in New York, as part of the 2025 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF). The event will be co-hosted by the Chair of UN-Water and the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA).

Our work

Now in its fifth year, this Special Event serves as a platform to take stock of progress on Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) and its contribution to the wider 2030 Agenda. It will highlight country-level implementation, the role of emerging technologies, and the ongoing intergovernmental process on water.

Over the past year, progress at the national level has demonstrated how advancing water-related goals can accelerate achievement across the SDGs. Countries are increasingly embracing peer-to-peer learning to share successful approaches and strengthen cooperation. In this spirit, UN-Water will launch the fourth series of the SDG 6 Country Acceleration Case Studies during the event, spotlighting practical examples of progress from Bhutan, Rwanda, and Saudi Arabia. The studies show how targeted policy interventions and coordinated UN support are helping to drive results. Read more here.

High-level representatives will share best practices and discuss the role of the UN system at the country level together with the UN Development Coordination Office, which oversees the Resident Coordinator System.

The event will also feature a conversation between the UN-Water Chair and the President of the 2025 session of the Economic and Social Council, reflecting on the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for sustainable water management. The discussion will examine the opportunities and risks of AI, with a focus on the links between water, climate, biodiversity, and sustainable food systems.

Finally, with the 2026 UN Water Conference on the horizon, and building on the outcomes of the UN 2023 Water Conference – which generated over 800 commitments under the Water Action Agenda – the event will include a forward-looking dialogue. Commitment holders and Member States will explore how to sustain momentum through inclusive, collaborative processes.
