The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) was adopted at the conclusion of the 15th Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.

The GBF addresses the alarming decline in nature, threatening 1 million species and billions of people’s lives.

The Framework consists of global targets to be achieved by 2030 and beyond to safeguard and sustainably use biodiversity, including:

  • Target 2: Ensure that at least 30 per cent of areas of degraded terrestrial, inland water, and marine and coastal ecosystems are under effective restoration.
  • Target 3: Ensure that at least 30 per cent of terrestrial and inland water areas, and of marine and coastal areas, are effectively conserved.
  • Target 11: Restore, maintain and enhance ecosystems functions and services for the benefit of all people and nature, including water-based ecosystems.

Urgent action across sectors and societies is essential to achieve these objectives and address biodiversity loss's key drivers, safeguarding ecosystems and species worldwide.
