IOM report: Who Are Climate Migrants?

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has released a new report analyzing the profiles of communities displaced by weather-related hazards.

“Who Are Climate Migrants? A Global Analysis of the Profiles of Communities Affected by Weather-Related Internal Displacements” seeks to fill critical data gaps by providing detailed demographic, socioeconomic, and geographical insights into affected populations.

The findings reveal that children are disproportionately affected by water-related displacement. Globally, children comprise 29.2 per cent of populations in areas hit by weather-related internal displacement, compared to 25.5 per cent in the general world population. This disparity is particularly stark in Africa, where children make up 44.1 per cent of the population in displacement-affected areas.

Other insights include the dire consequences of drought on pastoralist communities, and the heightened vulnerability of women to disease, injuries and fatalities during floods and extreme weather because of their water-fetching duties and lack of safely managed, climate-resilient sanitation facilities.

By highlighting these and many other demographic variations, the report aims to guide targeted interventions and long-term strategies to support displaced communities effectively.
