Comprehensive FAO analysis published for improved disaster risk reduction and management systems

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has released a series of comprehensive baseline studies of disaster risk reduction and management systems for agriculture in Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkmenistan.

On 8 August 2020, Rebecca Akamasi carries her child Akal Akamasi across a small inlet off Lake Turkana beyond Kalokol town.

These reports highlight the increasing threats of droughts, floods, and water scarcity to food production, urging governments to adopt proactive water governance strategies, emphasizing the need for improved irrigation systems, early warning mechanisms for water-related disasters, and sustainable groundwater management.

The studies recommend country-specific actions, such as enhancing water storage infrastructure, promoting climate-smart irrigation, and integrating hydrological data into policymaking.

FAO’s initiative is designed to support long-term water resilience, ensuring that communities can adapt to climate change impacts while maintaining food security. This effort aligns with broader regional goals for sustainable water and disaster risk management.
