Celebration of World Water Day 2025 and the 1st World Day for Glaciers

A joint celebration was held on 21 March at United Nations Headquarters in New York to mark the inaugural World Day for Glaciers and World Water Day 2025.

The theme of World Water Day 2025, “Glacier Preservation”, was selected to align with the first-ever World Day for Glaciers, drawing global attention to the rapid melting of glaciers and its devastating impact on people and the planet.

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) co-coordinated the World Water Day 2025 Task Force, the World Day for Glaciers, and the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation (2025), which also marks the start of the Decade of Action on Cryospheric Science (2025–2034).

The high-level event featured remarks from Mrs. Retno Marsudi, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Water, alongside Permanent Representatives, UN Principals, and senior UN officials. Speakers included Mr. Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA); Mr. Alvaro Lario, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and UN-Water Chair; and Prof. Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Other UN Principals and the UN Secretary-General also shared official messages to commemorate World Water Day, which can be viewed here.

The agenda also featured expert interventions, including the launch of the United Nations World Water Development Report 2025: Mountains and glaciers – Water towers, published by UNESCO on behalf of UN-Water, with its production coordinated by the UNESCO World Water Assessment Programme.
