National pilot testing for monitoring: Latest workshop in Peru

One of the keys to the successful implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals will be the monitoring of progress. For Goal 6 – Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all – the Integrated Monitoring initiative GEMI seeks to harmonize and expand existing efforts in monitoring, to ensure credible data on the entire water cycle.

Monitoring methodologies for SDG 6 indicators are now being piloted in six countries, examining the technical feasibility of methodologies, the usefulness of resultant data for shaping national policies and investment, and possible models for institutional cooperation within countries. First out were Jordan, Peru and Senegal, where inception workshops resulted in a greater understanding of national priorities and existing monitoring efforts, initial discussions on the implications of the 2030 Agenda and SDG 6 monitoring, as well as political endorsement of the upcoming work.

Preliminary results will be presented at the World Water Week in Stockholm.
