Identified issues / challenges related to water management Little awareness of water purification and insufficient attention on sanitation and hygiene at the school level
Description of the actions: cooperation mechanisms, initiatives, and results / current situation The workshop was organized under the theme of “United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation 2013” for students above grade 8 in both rural schools in the Daraniyagala division of the Dehiowita Education Zone, Sri Lanka. The programme received the patronnage of the Future of Food Academic Journal in the University of Kassel, Germany. There were 60 students and 9 teachers actively participating in the programme. Other teachers cooperated indirectly in the field work and gave additional support during the programme. The programme schedule followed a fruitful work plan, including training and lectures. Mr. Sisira Saddhamangala Withanachchi conducted the training workshop on behalf of the Future of Food and other lectures were conducted by Dilanka Edirimann from the University of Perdeniya. The lecture focused mainly on the following themes: 1. What is the United Nations and the UNESCO 2. Why water issues are becoming increasingly important in the world 3. Background about the basin, water and water availability in the region 4. Food production/agriculture and health risk 5. Garbage collection and categorization 6. Sanitation issues, Dengue epidemic and value of health habits Afterward, the students were grouped into 11 teams of 5 to 7 students each. Each grouped was named after one of the main rivers in the world. Groups participated in several projects in the afternoon: 1. Village awareness groups – went house to house in the village 2. Observatory group of water quality in the water channel in the village Finally, all groups shared their field experiences in a general meeting. All groups expressed their wishes to continue this awareness programme at the household and village scale.
How were the challenges overcome? Students could understand the issues related to sanitation, water purification as well as protecting water catchment area, as well as the methods that could help resolve such issues, particularly as regards to Deraniyagala, an upstream area of main rivers.
What are the success factors? Established "water circle" as a school student voluntary association. Getting the local community involved, so that residents of the neighborhoods near the school were aware of the need to clean up, manage garbage and avoid polluting water resources.
Lessons learnt Team work Simple techniques to check out water quality at the school level
