Strategic and High-Level Meeting on Water Security and Cooperation

11-13 September 2013 | Nairobi, Kenya

A Strategic and High-Level Meeting on Water Security and Cooperation was organized by UNESCO-IHP with the support of the Government of Kenya and of other sponsors within the framework of the International Year of Water Cooperation 2013.

The meeting was divided in three segments:

(1) High-level panels on Water Cooperation and Security in Africa focusing on the state of cooperation on freshwater in the Africa region/continent, highlighting existing modalities of cooperation, opportunities and barriers, as well as its linkages with water security. It also provided an opportunity to further discuss current views regarding the water components of the post-2015 agenda. This segment was open to the public.

(2) The meeting of the working group established by the Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological Programme at its 20th session to identify a suitable implementation strategy based on Member States’ inputs and catalyzing the participation of Member States in the development of the implementation plan for IHP-VIII on Water Security. It was aimed to provide a basis for intergovernmental cooperation within the framework of IHP for the next eight years (2014-2021), and its contribution to the post-2015 development agenda, with an emphasis on its freshwater components.

(3) A discussion to reinforce cooperation among the UNESCO Water Family, comprising water-related category 2 centres, water-related UNESCO Chairs, the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), and the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education. It followed up on the new strategy for UNESCO centres and catalyzed collaboration within the UNESCO Water Family.
