Delivering a "status report" to the UNCSD Rio 2012 conference on the application of integrated approaches to the development, management and use of water resources
The UN Commission on Sustainable Development at its
13th Session (CSD-13) in 2005 called on Governments and the UN System to take actions related to water resources management and decided to monitor and follow-up the implementation of decisions in 2012.
CSD-20 will mark 20 years after the Rio Earth Summit,
10 years after the Johannesburg Summit and 40 years after the Stockholm Conference. The Rio 2012 Summit thus provides a unique opportunity to strengthen the commitment from Governments and the international community to promote and implement integrated approaches to the sustainable management of water resources, as called for in Rio 1992 ( Chapter 18 of Agenda 21) and in Johannesburg 2002 ( the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation).
The report will be used as the basis for informed decision-making by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and national governments. It will include lessons learned and recommendations, as well as focus areas for action. The report will also provide guidance for establishing a regular international monitoring and reporting framework to promote sustainable development and management of water resources. The report will be based on a global survey which will assess progress and outcomes on the application of integrated approaches to the development, management and use of water resources.
Report development phases:
- Data collection though a global survey
- Case studies in selected countries
- Analysis and reporting
- Dissemination including the CSD 2012 conference
- Proposal for a future framework
All UN member countries are being requested to fill in a questionnaire in English and return it preferably online by 18th April 2011.
The questionnaire forms the primary source of data for the production of the report.
Instructions and the questionnaire in English are available from our Related Links. Spanish and French translations are also provided to facilitate the submission.
