Status Report on Integrated Water Resources Management
In 2005, the Thirteenth Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-13) requested that UN-Water follow up on decisions related to water and sanitation at two specific occasions: in 2008 and in 2012.
At the CSD-16, in 2008, UN-Water delivered a Status Report on Integrated Water Resources Management and Water Efficiency Plans based on surveys. For the review in 2012, UN-Water produced a new status report through its Task Force on Water Resources Management: The Application of Integrated Approaches to Development, Management and Use of Water Resources, which was released at the Rio+20 Summit in June 2012.
The Rio+20 Summit marked 20 years after the Rio Earth Summit, 10 years after the Johannesburg Summit and 40 years after the Stockholm Conference. The Rio+20 Summit thus provides a unique opportunity to strengthen the commitment from Governments and the international community to promote and implement integrated approaches to the sustainable management of water resources, as called for in Rio 1992 (Chapter 18 of Agenda 21) and in Johannesburg 2002 (the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation).
The report is to be used as the basis for informed decision-making by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and national governments. It includes lessons learned and recommendations, as well as focus areas for action. The report also provides guidance for establishing a regular international monitoring and reporting framework to promote sustainable development and management of water resources.
