Shaping the "World We Want" and the place of water
UN-Water contributed to putting water at the core of the debate in the Rio+20 process, with in a Statement, a set of Deliverables and a Status Report on Water Resources Management. We also organized a "Water Day at Rio+20" to highlight the relevance of water in the Rio+20 outcomes.The on-going Thematic Consultation on Water is organised by UN-Water and co-led by UNICEF and UNDESA; and aims to consult stakeholders on water-related priorities in the post-2015 development agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals and the World We Want.
Improving the knowledge base to support informed decision making
In 2012, the UN-Water family released a series of flagship publications including the WWDR4, the GLAAS 2012, the JMP 2012 update, and the Status Report on Water Resources Management for Rio+20. UN-Water monitors and reports on the state, use and management of the world's freshwater resources and on the situation of sanitation through a series of inter-connected and complementary publications. Together, these publications provide a comprehensive picture and, individually, a more in depth analysis of specific issues or geographic areas.
Raising awareness on water and food security
The World Water Day 2012 on "Water and Food Security" coordinated by FAO looked at ways to feed a growing world population within the boundaries of our freshwater resources. Because all that we eat indeed requires water to grow. Hundred of thousands of people worldwide celebrated the Day on 22 March and took action to reduce their water footprint.
Rewarding best practices
The 2012 edition of the UN-Water "Water for Life" Best Practices Award was handed out at a special ceremony during World Water Day celebrations on 22 March in Rome, Italy, to two outstanding initiatives: for the protection of Bangalore Lakes, India; and for spurring social and behavior change in four municipalities of Cochabamba, Bolivia.
A growing UN-Water family
In 2012, UN-Water welcomed WFP, UN Women and OHCHR as new Members and Water.org and IGRAC as new Partners, expanding the family to a total of 31 UN Members and 28 Partners.

2013 will be equally exciting with the on-going Thematic Consultation on Water for the World We Want 2015, the International Year of Water Cooperation and World Water Day, the annual UN-Water Conference in Zaragoza, the UN-Water "Water for Life" Best Practices Award, the International Water Summit in Abu Dhabi, the World Water Week in Stockholm, the publication of a much expected Analytical Brief on Water Security, and much more!
UNW-AIS: UN-Water's web platform to share information on its water-related projects and learning initiatives, as well as those of its Members and Partners.
- E-learning gateway
The UNW-AIS now contains a gateway to e-learning initiatives of UN-Water and its Members and Partners, produced from a recent inventory carried out by UNW-DPC.
- Virtual Learning Environment
The UNW-AIS now contains a Virtual Learning Environment for moderated e-learning courses from UN-Water Members and Partners. It will soon contain a new course from UNITAR/ UNW-DPC/ UN-HABITAT on "Urban Water Governance and Management in the Asia-Pacific Region."
