A new formula for the World Water Development Report

The United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR) will revise its scope and improve its format. Future editions will be annual and thematic, and will be in the order of 100 pages. The first edition of the new WWDR is expected in 2014 and will address "Water and Energy," which will also be the theme of the 2014 World Water Day campaign. This strategic decision is based on the recommendations of the Advisory Group on UN-Water Publications and builds on the findings of a global survey carried out in 2011/2012.

Interview with Olcay Ünver

"Water is not a sector by itself but a thread connecting all sectors. Consequently, the WWDR encompasses them and gives meaningful messages to those who are both inside and outside the 'water-box'. "

Olcay Ünver is the coordinator of the World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP), UN-Water's Programme responsible for the coordination of the United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR). In this interview, Olcay tells us about the WWDR4 "Managing Water under Uncertainty and Risks," released in March 2012, and the changes to future editions of the report and their motivations. He also gives us some hints about the upcoming WWDR5 on Water and Energy.

The voice of stakeholders

Global survey on UN-Water publications and the WWDR

Between December 2011 and January 2012, UN-Water carried out a global survey of stakeholders regarding its publications and especially the future of the World Water Development Report (WWDR). Over 1,100 respondents in 150 countries representing a wide range of stakeholders and potential readers responded to the survey. The results reveal that 96% of the respondents were in favour of UN-Water continuing to produce the WWDR. While respondents use the report for different purposes, they concord that it had become more relevant for them over time. However, the survey also revealed that stakeholders would benefit better from a WWDR that would essentially be more focused, shorter and more frequent. The new WWDR "formula" is intended to respond to these expectations.
