Celebrations and events took place worldwide on 22 March for World Water Day. Official celebrations and a High Level Forum took place in The Hague, The Netherlands. The programme of the day included inspirational speeches, presentations, panel and thematic discussions, and a series of public shows on the theme of water cooperation. A High-Level Interactive Dialogue of the 67th session of the UNGA was also convened in New York to mark the 2013 International Year of Water Cooperation and the twentieth anniversary of the proclamation of World Water Day.

A High-Level Meeting on National Drought Policy took place on 11 - 15 March 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. The meeting provided practical insight into useful, science-based actions to address the key drought issues being considered by governments and the private sector under the UNCCD and the various strategies to cope with drought. Over 430 participants from 92 countries participated in the Meeting. The Meeting declaration, proposed in the final session of the Policy Segment by the Prime Minister of Niger, has been adopted by acclamation by all the ministers present. |

A discussion on Water in the Post-2015 Development Agenda took place on 27-28 February 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland. Almost 200 participants from 70 countries gathered at UNECE at the Palais des Nations in Geneva to discuss the role of water in the Post-2015 Development Agenda. After five weeks of intense online discussion on the three sub-consultations of the Thematic Consultation on Water for the "World We Want", 2 of the 3 identified streams, 1) Water Resources Management and 2) Wastewater Management and Water Quality, came under the microscope for this two-day meeting hosted by the Swiss Government.

An open discussion on water in the post-2015 development agenda took place on 20 February 2013 at World Bank Headquarters in Washington DC. The event presented state of the art information on the on-going processes that will feed into the overarching inter-governmental process to develop post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The launch ceremony of the International Year of Water Cooperation 2013 took place on 11 February at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France. During this event, the winner of the slogan contest was announced, and the official slogan for water cooperation was adopted.
Children and youth participated in parallel activities at UNESCO HQ and in the Pavillion de l'Eau of Paris. Youth prepared and presented their Youth Declaration on water cooperation. |

UN-Water participated to the International Water Summit (IWS) 2013 that took place in the framework of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and was co-located with the World Future Energy Summit. UN-Water highlighted the links between water and energy and the need for integrated approaches. (news release) |
