UN-Water

Wednesday 20 February 2013 - 16.30-17.30
World Bank Headquarters, Building I, 1850 I St N.W. Washington, DC 20433 USA
Room 1-1200

Background

Following the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in June 2012, the United Nations are facilitating an open consultation to identify priorities from citizens and stakeholders around the world for the post-2015 development agenda, as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) will reach their target date in 2015. Water is one of the eleven thematic areas around which the global consultation is organized, along with inequalities, governance, health, environmental sustainability, population dynamics, growth and employment, conflicts and fragility, food security and nutrition, education and energy.

Objective:

The event will present state of the art information on the two following processes that will feed into the overarching inter-governmental process to develop post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • Technical discussion on water-related targets and indicators, including the results of the WHO/UNICEF Joint Monitoring Programme consultation on WASH, as well as recent developments on targets and indicators related to water resources and wastewater management.

  • Thematic Consultation on Water, where the leaders of each “stream” – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Wastewater Management & Water Quality and Water Resources Management – will report on the recommendations that came out from the global dialogue and respective online consultations.
